Greg Schechter’s Virtual Earth Viewer

Greg Schechter, a Microsoft developer, recently posted a Virtual Earth Viewer in the gallery of Silverlight samples at silverlight.net (Silverlight is Microsoft’s plug-in for rich Internet applications).  He incorporates some cool features that IDV has always championed like animated map transitions, coordinate-sensitive zoom scrolling, and faded map tile entries and exits.  He also overcame the potentially problematic direct image access limitation and scroll wheel viability.

It’s going to be exciting to see to what degree the Virtual Earth team integrates Silverlight into their own platform.  Interactive web mapping is as fitting an opportunity for rich web media as I can think of.  You can download Greg’s Virtual Earth Viewer source here.
